전쟁이 끝나고,
우리에게 누가 민주나무를 하나 가져다 주었다.
북쪽에서 잘 자라는 공산나무가 너무 번성하자, 그 나무를 막기 위해서 공짜로 준 것이다.
우리는 그 민주나무가 다른 나라 사람들이 힘들게 얻어낸 피의 결과물이라는 이야기는 들었지만,
또 피를 먹고 자란다는 이야기를 듣기는 했지만,
그냥 주어졌으니 그러려니.. 하고 그 그늘에 만족해 했다.
하지만 민주나무를 지키는 것은 역시 많은 노력과 또, 피가 필요했다.
우리의 민주나무는 우리의 피의 결과물이 아닌,
태생이 외생이어서 그런지 몰라도 많은 우리의 피를 필요로 했다.
민주나무는 우리의 땀과 피를 자양분으로 자라났다.
유시민이라는 사람은 우리의 민주나무를 보고, “후불제 민주주의” 라는 책을 쓰기도 했다.
우리는 어느정도 민주나무가 자라고.. 피 없이도 나무가 하루하루 잘 살아있는 것을 보고,
이제 피는 더 필요 없을 것이라고 생각했다.
민주나무는 이제 안정적으로 혼자서 자라고있으며, 더 이상의 관심도 필요 없을 것이라고 생각했다.
하지만, 갑자기 민주나무가 시들기 시작했다. 혼자서 잘 자라는 민주나무에 우리는 그 그늘에서 생활하면서도 나무에 신경을 쓰지 않았던 것이다. 민주나무를 잘 키우기 위해서는 끊임없는 관심과.. 또 우리가 잊고 있었던.. 피가 필요했던 것을 우리는 잊고있었던 것이다.
누군가가 나무 근처에서 예전에 그 나무를 키우던 사람의 글귀를 발견했다.
